Anthony Doogan

The activities of the National Association of Principals and Deputy Principals Retired (NAPDR) are fourfold. We support current members future in retirement by our members of Alliance, continuing your legal support through ARAG, representing NAPD on Worldwise Global Schools Consortium Board and providing a range of social activities for retired members. Maria Barry represents NAPDR on the executive of NAPD.

Tim Geraghty any Mary Friel, represent NAPDR on the Alliance of Retired Public Servants (ARPS). ARPS represents retired civil and public servants and has a mission to ensure that pension parity is maintained for retired public servants. ARPS is also seeking to secure some formal recognition for the rights of retired workers in the industrial relations process in matters that impact on pensions.

NAPDR executive have negotiated a pilot project that will provide continued legal advice for you through ARAG in your retirement. The independent legal advice that you receive as a member of NAPD will continue to apply for a very reasonable fee negotiated by Tim Geraghty.

Anthony Doogan represents the NAPD executive on the consortium of Worldwise Global Schools (WWGS). WWGS manages the delivery of Global Citizenship Education (GCE) to all second level schools on the island of Ireland. Approximately, two hundred schools receive grants and/or Educational Officer support from WWGS. The role includes guiding and governing the organization, interviewing candidates for positions as Education Officers, advising the Chief Executive on the best ways to engage schools, principals and staff. Anthony has advised WWGS that a presence at conference is one of the most effective ways to engage schools.

NAPDR executive organize a series of social gatherings for members during the course of each year. In 2025 we met for our spring lunch consisting of a guided tour of the Custom House followed by lunch in Trinity College. In May a three-night trip to Inishowen with visits to Wild Ireland, Fort Dunree and a weaving exhibition in Glendowen Craft shop were the highlights. Our AGM was held in the Sheraton Hotel, Athlone. We offered a full day of activities with golf and a walking history tour of Athlone available in the earlier part of the day. The business of our AGM took place in the afternoon including speakers from ARAG, the Senior Citizens Parliament and TILDA and Director Paul Crone. This was followed by dinner in the hotel. This year’s highlight for me will be our group visit to Tuscany in October visiting Florence, Sienna, Pisa among other places. It will be a pleasure to see Michelangelo’s David without having to sheperd forty teenagers around the place!

While not an official function of NAPDR, I would like to recognize the work of NAPD ambassadors. I know they provide an invaluable support to you in your work. Many are all active members of NAPDR and continue to support the work of NAPD in their retirement.

A special word of appreciation to Ciaran McCormick, Teresa Murphy and Pauline Moran for their sterling work as members of the NAPDR executive over the last number of years.
